Update on Malta’s Shipping Industry

Malta’s shipping register has been confirmed as the biggest worldwide in terms of superyachts, having 850 vessels larger than 24 metres.

Notwithstanding the effects of the COVID pandemic, Malta has seen a 7% increase in the number of registered yachts this year alone. Malta’s maritime register has also seen an increase of 50% over the past five years. These figures illustrate that Malta has established itself as a reliable base for yacht registration in which operators have confidence and are pleased with the quality of service.

It was also confirmed that Transport Malta has recently concluded a consultative exercise to redefine parameters related to the commercial yacht code, and is now embarking on another 3-month long consultation to make sure that the passenger yacht code is up to scratch. Efforts are also being made to promote green yachts which emit less harmful pollutants into the environment.
