Amendments to the Highly Qualified Persons Rules
By virtue of Highly Qualified Persons (Amendment) Rules (Legal Notice 29 of 2021), the Maltese legislator has made changes to the Highly Qualified Persons Rules (S.L. 123.126).
Most significantly, the scheme has now been extended by a further five-year period which means that the authorities can approve new applicants until 31st December 2025.
A further amendment that came about through this legislation is that any person who meets the criteria to be eligible for the regime shall be eligible to two extensions – four years in the case of third-country nationals and five years in the case EU/EEA nationals (previously there was only the possibility of a one-time extension).
