Intended applicants: International investors who are not nationals of the EU, EEA or Switzerland and who would like to apply for the right to permanently reside in Malta and to enjoy Visa-free travel across the Schengen area.
Main conditions for eligibility:
- Purchase or rental of a qualifying property;
- Must have capital assets of at least €500,000, out of which a minimum of €150,000 must be financial assets;
- Possess sickness insurance policy of cover all risks across Malta;
- Possess travel insurance when travelling across Schengen;
- Payment of a non-refundable administrative fee of €40,000;
- Payment of a Government contribution of €28,000 if purchasing a property or €58,000 if leasing a property;
- Payment of an additional €7,500 for each additional adult dependant (other than the spouse);
- Making a donation of €2,000 to a local philanthropic, cultural, scientific, artistic, sport or animal welfare NGO registered with the Commissioner of Voluntary Organisations.
Benefits:
- Have the right to settle, stay and reside permanently in Malta;
- Enjoy Visa-free travel across Schengen for 90 out of every 180 days;
- May include up to four generations in an application.
Tax treatment:
- Tax is charged at progressive rates (capped at a maximum of 35%) on Malta sourced income and capital gains, and on foreign source income that is remitted to Malta.
- Foreign sourced capital gains are tax exempt in Malta (even if remitted to Malta).
- No tax is chargeable on foreign sourced income that is not remitted to Malta.
- Bank interest earned in Malta can be taxed at a 15% final withholding tax.
